COMPAS Poll/Survey

At the onset of the campaign in the current federal election, the CEOs and business leaders on the COMPAS business panel were asked to score the importance of various issues and identify the best party leader on each issue. Management of the economy, spending/taxation, and Canada-U.S. relations emerge at the top with turmoil in Libya and elsewhere in the Middle East at the bottom.

On all issues explored in the survey, Stephen Harper trounces all other party leaders. Liberal leader Michael Ignatieff is the only other leader judged to be the most effective on the issues, and he loses to Harper by at least 3:1.

None of the other leaders is chosen by more than a very small group as most effective on any given issue. When the leaders are scored in terms of trustworthiness, the Green Party’s Elizabeth May rises to second place with Ignatieff falling to fourth place.

Large provincial government debt and deficits in Quebec and Ontario are deemed an important issue. Most panelists advise keeping federal-provincial transfers at present levels with no increase or decrease.

These are the key findings from this past week’s Internet survey of CEOs and business leaders on the COMPAS panel. The weekly business survey is undertaken for Canadian Business magazine.
